At Silverstone in October 2023, the family-run Bitcoin Racing team, led by principal Andrew Mackenzie with drivers Chris Mackenzie, Prem Ghinde and Luis Torres, used a race day to raise awareness of bitcoin. The team saw bitcoin as an “escape velocity” from a flawed financial system, a view shaped by the 2008 financial crash, and Chris Mackenzie finished fourth.
Speakers at the accompanying meet-up, hosted by Jason Deane, included Nanda Joree; Jose Morales, who described how bitcoin had helped El Salvador; and Mick Morucci of The Geyser Fund, which announced a sponsorship of Chris Mackenzie for the following season. Chris of Bridge2Bitcoin compared transaction speeds on the Lightning Network with PayPal and described the benefits of “Orange Pilling” businesses. The column presents the day as an example of a community building alternatives rather than waiting for the system to change.
