At the CheatCode conference in Bedford in April 2024, organiser Peter McCormack announced that Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss had invested $4.5 million in bitcoin to become co-owners of Real Bedford football club. The investment was intended to support the club’s Premier League ambitions and community projects, including a new training centre and football academy, and ticket proceeds were going to the Bedford Development Fund.
Speakers presented bitcoin as a “cheat code” for businesses and communities. They included American HODL, Preston Pysh, Calle, Bradley Rettler, Christopher Gordon of Bridge2Bitcoin and Erik Hersman. The article notes Metaplanet’s plan at the time to add $6.5 million in bitcoin to its treasury, and Jack Mallers discussed Strike’s planned launch in Europe, including the UK. About 70% of the audience said it was their first bitcoin conference.
