At the Nostriga conference, Jack Dorsey described Nostr as a censorship-resistant protocol for free speech. He funded the event, which had no commercial sponsors, and said he regretted that Twitter could not have been an open-source project. Nostr, which stands for Notes and Stuff Transmitted by Relay, passes messages through relays, so content blocked by one relay can still be shared by another.
The article places the conference alongside the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, enforcement of the EU’s Digital Services Act and cases in the UK where people have been jailed for social media posts. It describes MK Fain’s Henhouse.social, which uses Nostr to give women a space to connect without fear of restriction, and talks at Nostriga and Baltic Honeybadger by Preston Pysh, Lyudmyla Kozlovska and Max Hillebrand on censorship, open-source tools and privacy.
