Bitcoin’s supply is capped at 21 million, and at the time of the article just under two million were still to be mined. Every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, the reward paid to miners is cut in half. In late 2023, miners received 6.25 bitcoin per block, then worth around $215,000, following halvings in November 2012, July 2016 and May 2020, with the last bitcoin expected to be mined around 2140.
The next halving was expected around April 2024. The article notes that prices had tended to rise in the months after previous halvings, but cautions that past performance is not a guide to future outcomes and that investors should also weigh wider economic factors and network growth. It adds that the 59.4 million millionaires counted by Credit Suisse at the end of 2022 could not each own a whole bitcoin.
