Ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2024, the Argentine President’s office announced that Javier Milei would speak on the panel “Achieving Security and Cooperation in a Fractured World” to set out his libertarian economic plan. He had received more than 60 requests for bilateral meetings and travelled with a delegation of four on a commercial Lufthansa flight via Frankfurt, in contrast to the private planes and large entourages of previous presidents.
The article describes Milei’s economic views, rooted in the Austrian School, including the “Freedom to Transact”: the right of individuals to choose their medium of exchange, whether fiat currency, bitcoin or barter. It notes his proposal at the time to replace the Argentine peso with the US dollar to curb hyperinflation, and the difficulty of passing reforms while governing with a minority in Congress.
