A hearing at the County Court in Central London on 18 June 2026 considered whether a court can order a debt to be paid in bitcoin. In Hussain v Fix, British businessman Hamze Haji Hussain says German bitcoin investor Markus Harald Fix agreed to reimburse half of their shared business expenses in bitcoin and still owes BTC 7.806501396. Fix did not attend and had not served a defence.

The judge said he was happy to embrace novel developments in the law but did not think this was the right forum, and was unsure whether he had the power to make an award in bitcoin. He indicated that any amount would need to be converted to sterling at the date of the hearing. The case sits alongside the Property (Digital Assets etc) Act 2025, the Law Commission’s work on digital assets and the Miliangos ruling on foreign-currency judgments.
