In December 2023, while US approval of spot bitcoin ETFs was widely anticipated for as early as January 2024, Bitwise Asset Management released its first advert for its proposed spot bitcoin ETF. It featured actor Jonathan Goldsmith, known as “The Most Interesting Man in the World” in Dos Equis beer adverts, saying, “You know what’s interesting these days, bitcoin,” and ended with the tagline “ETFs backed by crypto specialists.”
The article notes that, unlike larger firms such as BlackRock, Bitwise already offered crypto ETFs, including the futures-based Bitwise Bitcoin and Ether Equal Weight Strategy ETF and Bitwise Bitcoin Strategy Optimum Roll ETF, and that a spot fund would give investors more direct exposure to bitcoin.
